Sleater-Kinney and "the caricature of myself"
First off, if you haven't picked up a copy of Sleater-Kinney's new album The Woods, you must! It rocks, seriously! In search of lame excuses for why it's been a month since I blogged, I'm going to throw out "too busy listening to Sleater-Kinney" as my one for the day...
...but I also went to see them last Thursday, June 23rd at Roseland here in a muggy, summer time New York City.

Now I've been a bit on and off with Sleater-Kinney, always respected their chicks who rock angle, but have been more of a tourist to their catalogue than permanent resident and fan. Reviews of the new album piqued my interest, so I decided to check it out. After a few listens, I was ready to go buy my tickets to see their oft hailed live act!
Okay, so I have seen them live before. I think the last time was when they opened for Guided By Voices at Summerstage in Central Park back in the summer of '97 or '98. It was a free show, so I was definitely willing to make the trip at the time, but don't remember it all that well. If you know me, you know I don't handle the heat or outdoor crowds all that well, so likely went on some sort of disassociative mental escape to get myself through it. I couldn't drink at the time, being under-aged and law abiding, so I'm not sure how I did it.
A lot has changeg in the time it's taken me to get to my second S-K show, and what I can say but that the band has definitely gotten better! Their sound is huge for a three person group, and they amply filled Roseland in most impressive ways. But given the critic's darlings they are, you're probably used to reading all this stuff, so let me give you my man, err...Phil, on the street angle...
Given that it's chicks rocking, it was awesome to report that the gender fuck at the rock concert doesn't end with who's on stage. The women in the crowd were tough, front-and-center, ready to dance around and rock out with their heroines. So much so that it was the guys in the crowd who had to be dragged out by their friends to take a break, I personally saw at least two guys who couldn't handle it. That's right boys, you can come, but if you can't handle the rock, take a seat on the sides. Nice!
I also had to confront a haunting vision that reveals itself whenever I get a glimmer of "the caricature of myself" inspired by seeing a guy wearing this t-shirt in the crowd:

While I've never been to Pittsburgh, I have considered making the trip just to go to the Andy Warhol Museum. But more significantly, there was the instant recognition that "the caricature of myself" would find the love of his life in this man at the Sleater-Kinney concert. While Corin, Carrie, and Janet are not loyal dykes anymore, they're devoted fanbase starts with the women for women set. I need not belabor the point of my love of lesbians, so I think you can see where this is going. He loves art, lesbians, indie rock, and isn't afraid to show it. Throw in a strange addiction to Erotic Photo Hunt and calling "Babe" his favorite movie, "the caricature of myself" would be a goner. Just think what we'd tell the grandchildren...
